Recognized as a historic district by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (NYCLPC) in 2007, the complex spans two blocks and consists of nine distinct buildings. The complex has a rich history, starting as a pencil factory in Midtown Manhattan in 1866. After a devastating fire, the factory moved to a larger location in Greenpoint, where it expanded through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, acquiring or adding several buildings along the way.

Presently, the complex has found new life as a hub of creativity and innovation. The Lighthouse Membership Process Explained

The Lighthouse offers a four-year, application-based membership at an estimated cost of approximately $5,750 per year. Striving to break economic barriers and promote diverse representation, The Lighthouse will also introduce the Lighthouse Academy. This will be a subsidized membership specifically created for underrepresented creators from local communities, providing them access to physical spaces, production facilities, and mentorship programs.

To ensure the selection of members from a wide array of backgrounds, The Lighthouse has constituted a Creator Council.
