Today, Patreon showcased its revamped brand aesthetics and a refreshed mobile app. According to CEO Jack Conte, these modifications underscore Patreon’s dedication to equipping creators with the autonomy to cater to their fans without being hindered by any third-party platform.

Conte, in his conversation with The Verge, mentioned, “The objective is to amalgamate all our offerings into a unified, seamless experience for creators and their fanbase.”

The Creator Economy is growing. And so is Patreon.

In the recent past, Patreon has methodically incorporated native tools, presenting them as alternatives to external tools  like YouTube, Discord, and TikTok. Now, Conte emphasized that Patreon aims to complement these platforms rather than replace them, evolving from merely a paywall to a comprehensive application that can fit seamlessly into a content creators workflow.

Soon, creators on Patreon can introduce free membership levels, permitting fans to engage without any subscription fees. Additionally, there’s the option for creators to market digital products and courses, making even more revenue for content creators possible.

A prominent new feature, signaling the direction Patreon is moving towards, is the extensive release of community chats, reminiscent of Discord. It’s evident that Patreon envisages its platform as not only a content repository but also a hub for fans to discuss, interact, and grow community.

Patreon’s CPO, Julian Gutman, points out the inadequacy of platforms like Twitter for fan discussions, stating, “Such platforms aren’t tailored for profound fan engagement.”

Complementing the community chats, Patreon has rejuvenated member profiles, offering more detailed bios, images, and links. Future iterations might display a user’s subscription tier, their purchases, and the creators they back. However, just to be clear, these new member profiles have also sparked some privacy concerns among users – concerns that Patreon says they will address.

Users will also experience a modified home feed, where posts from each creator are categorized together, ensuring more coherent content flow. Creators will also have the liberty to personalize their landing pages.

To reflecting this new branding, Patreon’s logo is also getting a makeover, with the final design being flexible. Its static representation somewhat resembles a silver bean (we think it looks like something that resembles the mind, or a brain), but it can adapt according to its placement. In a bid to empower creators, Patreon also plans to introduce a feature allowing them to design their own bespoke logo.

All this won’t be without it’s challenges, however. Last year, some creators who hosted videos on Vimeo faced potential loss due to unexpected price hikes. Patreon’s payment processing also experienced glitches, causing inconvenience for some creators and fans. Again, these are issues that have been ironed out, and Patreon hopes to expand to meet the needs of creators.

In fact, Conte is quite optimistic about the future of the creator economy, anticipating a greater shift from platforms to individuals. He said, “The tools and infrastructure have to be personalized and aligned with individual creators’ objectives.” He firmly believes that Patreon is evolving in a direction that many other platforms haven’t yet embraced, and he thinks the future is bright.
